News In Processor Architecture

In the last couple weeks I stumbled upon some interesting posts. So here they are in no particular order.

It is been a long standing trend that processor architectures are moving towards heterogeneous cores. Here is a recent article that underlines the many reasons for that trend and the major problem with it: Everyone is still looking for the magic compiler! There is also a fun post on Texas Instruments blog about multi-core coffee machines.

In case you are bored with Intel, nVidia and AMD news, take a look at: MIT chip harvests energy from light, heat and vibrations and Evolution could generate new semiconducting structures.

The Computer Architecture Panel at the ACM Turing Award Webcast is very much worth watching. Wires are becoming (again) the limiting factor which is also the emphasis of How data moves is key.
